Lorsque l’on regarde une projection cinématographique, publicitaire ou bien celles qui accompagnent un concert, notre œil efface volontairement tout le dispositif mécanique (source de lumière, écran de projection) et la texture de l’image (résolution, trame) pour comtempler uniquement son ensemble et rentrer dans l’illusion de la mise en scène. Une projection a cette capacité de transformer l’espace afin qu’il ne devienne qu’un support à la lumière projetée. Ce dialogue entre l’espace physique (matière) et l’espace projeté (lumière) m’a inspiré une nouvelle série de tableaux qui, par la peinture, interroge ces deux frontières. 

In his latest series of works, Montreal-based painter Ianick Raymond examines the nature of the projected image through a series of optical experiments. Naturally drawn toward representational elements, we tend to assemble pictorial signifiers into coherent images by disavowing the apparatuses through which these images come into existence. By exploiting the optical properties of color, texture and shape, Raymond circumvents our visual reflexes by bringing to the fore the invisible mechanisms supporting the images we encounter on a daily basis. Harnessing techniques of figuration and abstraction, these works translate the dematerialized nature of projected images into material form to question their legibility and shift viewer perception.
